Could tube strikes escalate to nationwide walk out

Could the strike action proposed by the RMT and TSSA be the beginning of another winter of discontent? Experts are currently divided but the RMT is calling on all unions to join together for the biggest industrial action campaign since 1990 in protest at proposed government spending cuts.

TUC Congress takes place next month and the transport union has tabled a motion for an immediate summit of union leaders to discuss country-wide walk outs in protest at public spending cuts, which it says will threaten jobs, pension provisions and front-line services. For the first time there will be no government speaker as Vince Cable’s invitation has been withdrawn.
